Jalousie des tempêtes!! is a somewhat unfaithful reimagining. In collaboration with the singers and performers Jeanne Pâris and Emma Saba, the piece haunts the classical operatic repertoire with the ghosts of the present. In a play on the trans-historical ubiquity of bodies and voices, the artists weave together attempts and failures at fusion and belonging within the genre. On stage, the arias of the past are transformed into fragments, laughter and sighs. Classical music cracks open to let other voices through. Opera sheds its polish and becomes raw material: desire, anger, tenderness. The heroines who were too much in love, too mad, too loud—those who were sacrificed on stage to be silenced—return to demand their revenge. Jalousie des tempêtes!! is a performance-concert. It is at once a celebration, an insurrection, a revolt and a reflection on the politics of voices.
