#THISISBEAUTY is a work by the choreographer and dancer Lisi Estaras, who is celebrating her fiftieth birthday with a solo performance.

What is the performer thinking whilst executing the movement?

Saying what we say does not always coincide with showing what we say. In this creation, a fascination with the role of words and language in dance becomes the centrepiece of the work, alongside an encounter with the philosopher Carla Carmona from the University of Seville. Drawing inspiration from the thought of Ludwig Wittgenstein, reinterpreting it from a gender perspective and gathering testimonies from other women in their fifties, Lisi constructs a physical and verbal autobiographical fiction that challenges the absurd limits of communication. Themes such as the menopause, humour and the place of ‘mature’ women on stage are tackled without compromise or political correctness. What do a killer whale and a human being have in common?

Lisi Estaras tackles this – and forty-nine other questions, one for each year of her life – at a dizzying pace in her solo piece #THISISBEAUTY. Through these autobiographical questions, she ironically reveals the absurdity of language. Dance and language stand on an equal footing.
