SINGSPIELE is a dance-theatre piece created by the French choreographer Maguy Marin (recipient of the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 2016 Venice Biennale) and performed by Dada Bene Mambouch. The title refers to the 18th-century operatic form that alternated between singing and recitation, but in this case the emphasis is on bodily movements, understood as social indicators, and on the face, as a source of mystery and a reflection of multiple identities.

With a minimalist staging, dominated by the play of light and shadow, the performer moves with a solemn slowness reminiscent of Nō theatre. Mambouch embodies a parade of diverse figures: anonymous passers-by, pop icons, political leaders and historical figures.

This mosaic of faces and postures forms a visual anthropology of our age, exploring anonymity, the uniqueness of faces, the projections they inspire or evoke, and collective memory. The performance unfolds as a stream of presences suspended between the dramatic and the grotesque, the banal and the extraordinary.

Maguy Marin presents a political and poetic work, a microsociology of the human condition, which lays bare the gestures of everyday life and our fragilities.
