Almost 20 years after its creation, and 17 since it was first presented at the Santarcangelo Festival, PASODOBLE returns to Italy.

A project that has marked the path of Cristina Kristal Rizzo – one of the few artists invited by every Santarcangelo Festival director since then – and of Italian choreographic production as a whole.

The performance, whose character of rupture did not diminish over time, is part of the research phase that Kinkaleri carried out in those years on the questioning of theatrical representational mechanisms: in an empty room, a person in front of a video camera performs an improvisation lasting a few minutes with a background chosen at random from the frequencies of a portable radio; then he connects the video camera to a monitor and in real time reconstructs the movement phrase, learning it by heart. The duration is determined by the time required for learning. The improvised movement is thus transformed into a choreographic composition.

The spectator is asked to abandon the idea of the performance as a product and to share in the artist’s creative and emotional process.

PASODOBLE is a device that originated within Kinkaleri in 2004 as a response to an invitation from the BASE progetti per l’arte gallery in Florence, which hosted the performance’s debut on 20 February of the same year. The event is part of the research phase that the collective carried out in those years, linked to the questioning of theatrical representational mechanisms and to an idea of shared presence between artist and audience.

Between 2006 and 2007 the performance was then presented in theatrical contexts such as the Santarcangelo Festival, Es.Terni Festival, RAUM Xing Bologna and the RED Festival in Reggio Emilia. In December 2014 it was presented again at the invitation of Galleria Biagiotti in Florence on the occasion of the finissage of the disUmanesimi exhibition and in 2015 at the Tropici Festival in Rome.
